MKRS Law congratulates Partner Mariam D. Yanes, Esq. on being selected for the Attorney Spotlight in the Florida Bar Workers’ Compensation Section’s News & 440 Report (Spring/Summer 2026). Mariam was featured as part of the publication’s “Defying Uniformity: Spotlight on Diverse Leaders in the Workers’ Compensation Legal Community,” recognizing attorneys who have made a meaningful impact on Florida’s workers’ compensation community through their leadership, professionalism, and dedication to the practice of law.
With 18 years of exclusive workers’ compensation defense experience, Mariam has built a reputation for thoughtful advocacy, meticulous preparation, and an unwavering commitment to achieving fair and just outcomes for employers and insurance carriers throughout Florida. Based in South Florida, she represents clients in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, bringing both strategic insight and practical experience to every case she handles.
A Passion for Advocacy
When asked what inspired her to become an attorney, Mariam shared that her motivation has always been rooted in standing up for others. “Growing up, I noticed how often people who lacked power, knowledge, or a voice simply got steamrolled—not because they were wrong, but because no one was in their corner advocating loudly enough.” Although she has spent her entire legal career on the defense side, Mariam explains that her passion has never been about choosing sides—it has always been about ensuring the legal process is conducted fairly, rigorously, and with integrity.
Preparation Is the Difference
Throughout the interview, one theme consistently emerged: preparation. One of Mariam’s proudest professional accomplishments involved a difficult case where the facts were not initially favorable. Through careful preparation and a thorough understanding of the rules of evidence, she successfully prevailed at the final hearing, and the favorable outcome was affirmed on appeal.
For Mariam, success in litigation is rarely accidental. It comes from mastering the details, understanding the law, and preparing better than anyone else in the courtroom.
Finding Challenges in Every Case
Workers’ compensation law is often viewed as a straightforward area of practice, but Mariam sees something very different. She describes it as “complexity masquerading as simplicity.” Each case presents unique issues involving medical causation, compensability, apportionment, and witness credibility. Solving those legal and factual puzzles is what continues to inspire her nearly two decades into her career.
Leadership Beyond the Courtroom
While Mariam is recognized for her legal accomplishments, she considers her greatest achievements to be much more personal. She credits her family as her proudest accomplishment, noting the challenges—and rewards—of balancing a demanding litigation practice while raising kind, grounded children alongside her husband.
She also reflects on the importance of cultivating lasting relationships with clients, colleagues, judges, mentors, friends, and family throughout her career. Those relationships, she explains, have shaped not only the attorney she has become but the person she strives to be every day.
Advice for the Next Generation
Asked what advice she would give to her younger self, Mariam offered encouragement that resonates with every new attorney beginning their career: “Slow down and trust the process.” She reminds young lawyers that everyone feels uncertain during their first year of practice and encourages them to embrace the unique perspective they bring to the profession rather than viewing it as a disadvantage.
A Philosophy for Success
Perhaps the most revealing insight from the interview came when Mariam shared the everyday habit that has become second nature: “Start before the world starts.” Recognizing that litigation is unpredictable, she believes the quiet hours before the workday begins are invaluable for planning, preparing, and staying ahead. It is a simple philosophy that reflects the discipline and professionalism clients have come to expect from her.
Congratulations, Mariam!
