Robert J. Rodriguez: Celebrating 40 Years at MKRS LAW

Forty years ago, a young attorney from Miami walked through the doors of MKRS LAW, or a version thereof, and began what would become a remarkable career. Today, as Robert J. Rodriguez celebrates his 40th anniversary with the firm—and his 24th year as Managing Partner—we recognize not only his professional accomplishments, but also the person whose character, leadership, and dedication have helped shape MKRS LAW for more than half of its existence.

In many ways, Robert’s story is intertwined with the story of the firm itself.

For 40 of MKRS LAW’s 68 years, he has been a constant presence—guiding clients through challenges, mentoring attorneys, helping lead the firm through decades of growth, and building relationships that have stood the test of time.

Yet those who know Robert understand that his greatest impact extends far beyond the practice of law.

A Story Rooted in Family, Hard Work, and Opportunity

Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, Robert’s journey reflects the story of many South Florida families who came to this country seeking opportunity and a brighter future.

Growing up in Miami’s vibrant Cuban American community, he learned early the values that would come to define both his life and career: hard work, perseverance, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Those who know Robert understand that these are not just values he talks about, they are values he lives every day. Whether representing a client, mentoring a young attorney, or supporting a loved one, he approaches every responsibility with dedication, integrity, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

Over the course of four decades, those same principles have earned him the trust of clients, colleagues, and friends throughout Florida and have helped shape the culture of MKRS LAW.

Family Has Always Come First

While Robert’s professional accomplishments are extensive, ask those closest to him what matters most, and the answer is simple: family.

Many long-time members of the MKRS LAW team remember when his daughter, Janelle, practically grew up in the hallways of the firm. Today, that same little girl is a mother herself, and Robert has embraced one of his favorite roles yet—grandfather.

His granddaughter and grandson are the center of his world.

Whether sharing stories, creating memories, or simply enjoying time together, Robert’s love and pride for his family are evident to everyone around him.

His devotion extends across generations. He remains deeply committed to caring for his mother, cherishes his relationships with his siblings, and has always placed family at the heart of everything he does.

The same loyalty and commitment that have defined his legal career are the qualities that define him most as a son, brother, father, grandfather, and partner.

A Lifelong Student

One thing those who know Robert quickly learn is that he rarely does anything halfway.

If a topic captures his interest, he immerses himself completely.

Whether it’s understanding the nuances of a legal issue, mastering a new home improvement project, researching wine, planning a trip, or exploring a new hobby, Robert approaches every endeavor with curiosity, discipline, and a determination to get it right.

Friends and colleagues often joke that if Robert takes up a new hobby, it won’t be long before he’s the resident expert.

As Administrative Assistant Leona Herrera recalls:

“I’ve always been surprised at his insistence on doing the physical labor himself—whether it’s painting his house, working with orchids, or learning a new craft. He doesn’t believe in hiring someone for a job he can do himself. He’s truly a jack of all trades.”

That relentless pursuit of knowledge is one of the qualities that has made him such an effective attorney, leader, and problem solver throughout his career.

Beyond the Office

Away from the practice of law, Robert enjoys many of life’s simple pleasures.

He appreciates a great bottle of wine, enjoys traveling and exploring new destinations with his fiancée, and finds satisfaction in hands-on projects around the house. Whether renovating, building, researching, or perfecting a skill, he enjoys the process of learning and creating.

These interests reflect the same traits that have defined his professional success: patience, attention to detail, and a genuine passion for doing things well.

A Leader Who Leads by Example

During his 24 years as Managing Partner, Robert has helped guide MKRS LAW through tremendous growth and change while remaining true to the firm’s founding values.

His leadership style has always been rooted in example rather than title.

He has never asked others to do what he would not do himself. He remains deeply involved with clients, invested in the success of his team, and committed to maintaining the culture of professionalism and service that has long distinguished MKRS LAW.

For generations of attorneys and staff, he has been more than a managing partner. He has been a mentor, teacher, sounding board, and steady presence whose guidance has helped shape countless careers.

Equity Partner Omar Perez, Jr., who has worked alongside Robert for decades, reflects:

“This milestone is a testament to Robert’s exceptional leadership, vision, and commitment to the firm and its clients. For four decades, he has helped build a culture of excellence, professionalism, and integrity that continues to guide our success today.”

“On a personal note, I am especially grateful that he gave me the opportunity to join the firm. His confidence in me has had a meaningful impact on my career, and I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn from his leadership and example over the years.”

The People Behind the Legacy

The success of any leader is ultimately reflected in the people they inspire.

For many at MKRS LAW, Robert’s greatest contribution has been the culture he has created—one built on professionalism, loyalty, mentorship, innovation, and genuine care for others.

Attorney Jesse C. Price shares:

“Robert has been part of creating a legacy at this Firm wherein there is a genuine caring for everyone, which is a quality that I greatly admire and one of the many reasons it is easy to pledge loyalty to him.”

That sentiment is echoed throughout the firm by attorneys and staff who describe Robert as approachable, supportive, and deeply invested in the success of those around him.

As attorney Tiffany Hawks observed:

“There are leaders who manage, and then there are leaders who transform—and Robert has always been the latter. He has challenged us to embrace new ideas, lean into change, and pursue excellence with both ambition and integrity.”

The culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and excellence that exists at MKRS LAW today is a direct reflection of the example Robert has set throughout his career.

The Legacy of 40 Years

The true measure of a career is not found in awards, titles, or years of service—although Robert has earned many of those along the way.

It is found in the people impacted by that career.

It is found in the clients who continue to place their trust in him after decades of working together. It is found in the attorneys he has mentored, the colleagues he has supported, the family he has cherished, and the culture he has helped build at MKRS LAW.

Few people have had a closer view of Robert’s journey than Equity Partner Scott H. Silver, who has worked alongside him for more than 38 years.

Scott reflects:

“Over this 14,600-day marathon, your expertise, dedication, and perseverance have been respected and admired by those wise enough to take a step back and witness it. Personally, over my 38-plus years working together, I am so glad that I took that step back a very long time ago—and have only been more impressed every day in the interim.”

As we celebrate Robert J. Rodriguez’s 40th anniversary with the firm, we celebrate more than an accomplished attorney and respected Managing Partner.

We celebrate a devoted family man, a trusted friend, a lifelong student, a mentor, and a leader whose influence can be felt throughout every corner of our firm.

For 40 years, Robert has helped shape the legacy of MKRS LAW. His own legacy is one of leadership, loyalty, integrity, and heart.

Attorney Colin McLean perhaps summed it up best when reflecting on his hiring:

“In 2011, Robert hired me over a couple of mojitos. I still like to think that it was the best decision a mojito ever made.”

Behind the humor lies a truth shared by generations of MKRS attorneys and staff: Robert’s greatest legacy is not simply the firm he helped build, but the people whose lives and careers he has influenced along the way.

And that is something truly worth celebrating.
